Kali had begun to revive from her cream induced coma by the time they made it back to the lab. She twisted in Ember’s arms, making small grunts of protest.

“Why is it so cold down here?” she muttered.

“You know why,” Ember said, laughing a little.

“So the cadavers don’t get up and wander off,” Cedric quipped. Kali laughed.

“Yeah, one Pharaoh Hori is enough,” she muttered.

“Where is he, anyway?” Ember asked. “Did he become a deputy?”

“Well…” Cedric looked uncomfortable. “He did. But we couldn’t get him to actually do any effective work. So we sent him, Tyrone and Emmy Lou on a private case.”

“Private case?” Ember asked, mystified.

“You know the tale of Lenny Goose?” Cedric grinned.

“Yes, of course. Everyone heard it as a kid. An old farmer that wandered off and was never found. Great creepy story, but it has dozens of versions now after being handed down over the generations.”

“Well, we kind of sent them out to solve the case.” Cedric said, looking just a bit bashful. Kali laughed and wriggled in Ember’s arms.

“You literally sent them on a wild goose chase!” Kali couldn’t contain herself. Cedric shrugged.

“After Hori broke his sixth filing cabinet just by opening the door too hard, I decided I had to get him out of the station. They are settled in a cabin up the mountain. Tyrone sends daily reports. He’s taking it very seriously.”

Ember covered her hand and giggled. “You’re devious, Cedric.”

He grinned. “Well. I try.”

They headed into the lab, feeling lighthearted over the little joke. Ember feared a little for Tyrone’s pride, but she still thought it was a good way to keep them occupied. She couldn’t begin to guess what Emmy Lou was doing out there but hopefully, she was busy too.

“Cedric,” Doc Dalton said, standing up and walking over to them. “It’s good to see you, Ember.”

“What have you got?” Cedric asked, knowing that Dalton had found something.

“The pecan found in the pie is definitely from the same tree growing in the Fagen’s yard,” Dalton said, hurrying over to grab his report.

“Yes!” Kali hissed, rolling in Ember’s arms. “I told you!”

“Excellent work,” Cedric said, checking the report. “We can get her in for proper questioning now.”

They hurried back upstairs to set up the interview. To Ember’s surprise the woman agreed to come in straight away.

“Maybe, she’s guilty and knows she’s done,” Kali mused.

“Maybe she’s worried about getting arrested in front of her whole street,” Cedric suggested.

There was no time for further musings, because Melissa Fagen chose that moment to make her appearance. Ember understood now why she had been so easy to bring in. Walking at her side was Andy Harlock, the best lawyer in Louisiana. Ember and Cedric had both heard of him—it would be difficult to find a law enforcement officer that hadn’t.

The man offered a slow, confident smile as he shook their hands. Melissa sat down and folded her hands, her face composed and her eyes down. It was clear she didn’t intend to answer any questions.

“Now that we’re all acquainted,” Harlock said.
